Big progress on my recovery as I get back to the kind of paddling that requires a helmet.
Autumn is off to a rough start in the North Atlantic, with a procession of deep lows and named storms either hitting Ireland directly or passing close by and sending big swells our way.
The nice thing about the southwest corner of the island, where I live, is that you can almost always find somewhere sheltered enough to paddle. On massive swells, there are plenty of coves and sheltered spots that offer more manageable conditions.
Over the weekend, my buddy Dan and I drove around looking for a break that could handle the south/southwest swell that was maxing out the go-to spots. We found a playful rivermouth break and did some kayak surfing.
These sessions are a confidence boost and a chance to test and practice the bracing, rolling, and rescue skills you rarely use on a fitness paddle.
